SCENT SCHOOL · THE ESSENTIALS
How to choose a skin musk
Skin musks are not one smell. Some read as clean laundry, some as warm cashmere, some as peppered skin and some as powdery iris. The useful question is not whether you like musk, but which texture of musk feels like you.
Start with the texture
For a clear, airy direction, look for aldehydes and white musks. For a closer, warmer effect, ambrette, cashmeran and soft woods can add body without turning sweet.
Use contrast to avoid flatness
A pepper, iris, mimosa or pale wood can make a musk feel more recognisable. This is why two skin scents can have a similar intimacy but a very different personality.
Test on skin, then give it time
A note list is a useful map, not a promise of how a fragrance will develop on every person. Wear a small amount, return to it later and decide whether you want it to stay quiet or become more textural.
